Options for Drainage for Your Outdoor Shower

A question that comes up often from our customers is how to properly drain the wastewater created from their Cape Cod Outdoor Shower Kit. Below are a few great options that can suit any backyard and skill level.

Cedar flooring & shower pans

If you have decided to purchase one of our Cedar Showers, we offer a beautiful matching cedar flooring. This flooring was specifically designed with drainage in mind and doubles as a solid, flat surface to stand on. Below the cedar flooring a shower pan, made of metal, plastic or rubber, can be used to collect wastewater. The shower pan can then be drained through the attached tube and into garden beds or a wastewater system.

stone pavers

If you’re not a fan of cedar flooring, stone pavers are also a great option for optimal drainage with a dry well system created below them. These pavers can be an extension of your patio to add cohesiveness to your backyard, or they can stand alone as the foundation for your shower.

Use beach pebbles under your shower kit floor for drainage
beach pebbles & dry wells

While stone pavers and a cedar floor will do a great job with drainage, adding beach pebbles or marble chips along with a dry well system, is a great way to catch extra run off water and add a spa aesthetic to your shower. The dry well system is great for yards that can’t soak in the run-off water. To create a dry well you’ll need to install a layer of gravel below the pebbles where the water can drain through and filter. Always check your local ordinances for specifications on dry wells.

french drain

Although this sounds elaborate and fancy, it’s nothing more than a gravel-filled ditch with a hidden pipe that carries the run off water from your shower away from your home and into a wastewater system.

French drains can be an aesthetically pleasing part of your yard, or can be concealed with dirt and soil.
